Known in France as a pot de cuisine or pot de graisse, this small crock would have held rendered fat, preserved foods or condiments on a farmhouse larder shelf. The form and glaze technique are consistent with provincial French country production circa 1850 to 1900.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pot has a gently shouldered body that narrows at the neck before flaring slightly at the rim. The upper two-thirds of the exterior carry a red-brown iron-rich glaze applied by dipping, leaving the lower body and foot in natural, unglazed terracotta. A thin cream glaze drip is visible at the rim on one side where the two glazes met during firing. The interior is glazed in a cream and olive-brown tone with clearly visible concentric throwing rings, confirming hand-throwing on a potter's wheel. The base is unglazed terracotta with an impressed mark that appears to read a number -- possibly a size or batch mark -- though it is partially worn and cannot be read with certainty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rim shows chipping and small losses to the glaze in several places, consistent with age and use. The exterior glaze has worn and flaked across the lower shoulder, exposing the clay body in patches. There is surface grime and dark spotting on the base and interior floor.
